Ugh…we hate it, they hate it…it’s the CONE OF SHAME. If only they could understand just NOT to lick their wound, but they don’t. And while it really does suck, the cone (official name, e-collar) is SO necessary for them to heal faster.
Unfortunately, the cone-of-shame vet provides this uncomfortable cone, that many times they have to wear for several weeks. What’s the solution? While there may not be a COMPLETE solution for this, there are ways you can make them feel just a tad bit more comfortable.
This is by far the most comfortable for our furry BFF’s; however, if your dog is still touching it over the pajama’s, then this alternative won’t work (unfortunately).
Also if your pup’s wound isn’t from getting fixed (i.e., wound on paw) then the PJ’s may not work.
The foam padded nylon makes it a little more comfortable than the traditional e-collar; however, make sure their collar is not too tight (2 fingers under the collar is a general rule).
Short, monitored breaks
While this is probably your pup’s favorite alternative, it requires a lot from YOU as the owner. You do have to pay very close attention to make sure they aren’t touching the wound.
Last, no matter what alternative you choose, make sure to give them extra love. You can de-sesitize them to the cone by praising and lots of treats when they behave in their cone-of-shame. Luckily, dogs tend to adapt quickly to their environment as well!
What alternative is your favorite? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
