Before we get started, let me point out, that NO leash or tool will TEACH your dog how to stop pulling on a leash. That’s all up to you, and it’s all about consistency. If you’re not even sure where to start with teaching your dog, no worries, I have a full video where I go over how to teach your pup to walk calmly on a leash.
I also have an ultimate good dog blueprint where I do cover how to teach your dog to walk calmly on a leash as well.
That being said, loose leash walking can take days, weeks, or months to teach your pup. In the meantime, it will help to have a good solid leash and harness to help with your dog’s pulling.
My favorite leashes are in my Amazon store; however, if you want to know what makes a good leash for dogs who pull, watch my video on YouTube, or read below.
Leather Leash
I recommend purchasing a leather leash as it’s mUCh easier on your hands than a nylon leash.
If you refuse to use a leather leash (for whatever reason), try tying knots into your nylon leash for an easier grip. However, I promise the leather version will be much easier on your hands.
Make sure it’s not too long OR too short
In most cases, the 6-foot dog leash will be the best size. You want to give your pup enough freedom to not feel so constricted. At the same time though, if your leash is TOO long, then you won’t have enough control over your dog, and they could potentially run into the street.
Purchase the correct leash width for your pup’s size
You can read each leash’s size guidelines, or follow these general ones.
30 lbs and under = 1/2″
40 lbs – 80 lbs = 5/8″
80 lbs – 120 lbs = 3/4″
120 lbs – 165 lbs = 1′
Avoid Retractable Leashes at all costs
They reinforce your dog for pulling causing them to pull more, they can easily break and are not meant for pups who pull. I actually have a WHOLE video on why I don’t recommend retractable leashes, where I go into more detail if you’re curious.
Do keep in mind, I do get a *small* kickback from any purchases on my Amazon store; however, these are all products I love and use myself. Additionally, it helps me carve out time to publish free content like this. I truly appreciate your support, friends!
