Are Goldendoodles hypoallergenic? Short answer – yes and no. I elaborate in the video below, so watch for more info.
Alright, so to answer the hypoallergenic question, no doodle is 100% hypoallergenic, so if you’re extremely allergic to dogs, I wouldn’t just assume you’re going to be okay. If anything, I would try visiting friends first with Goldendoodles (or offer to dog walk for a neighbor) just so you can see how your body reacts. I’ve just seen so many doodles get given up due to their “daughter being allergic” and whatnot, so just check first.
That being said, if you just have a minor allergy to dogs, doodles are much better because they don’t shed (as much). When I was younger, I used to be pretty allergic to dogs. However, when I went to visit my friend’s toy poodle, I’d have no allergic reaction at all. But I think it’s important to spend some time with the type of dog you’re thinking about getting, so you don’t end up having to rehome the new dog or puppy.
When getting a Goldendoodle though, keep in mind that not all are created equal when it comes to allergies.
Groodles are divided into three generation types:
- F1 Doodles are bred from a Golden Retriever and a Poodle (both purebred). These Doodles will have a 50% chance of becoming either non-shedding or moderately shedding so it’s important you look for a CURLIER coat if you’re allergic (curly = more poodle).
- F1B generation Goldendoodles are bred from an F1 and a Poodle of any size. This makes them 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever. Since they will have more “Poodle Gene”, F1B Goldendoodles will most likely have a non-shedding coat which is more likely to be hypoallergenic compared to the F1 type. Nonetheless, it is never a guarantee. While red hair is a recessive gene in humans – there are still red heads born with two brunette parents! Once again, look at the coat – curlier means more likely to be hypoallergenic.
- F2 generations can either come from two F1 Generation Goldendoodles or an F1 and F1B. These can be cheaper than the two previous ones. Once again – look at the coat! Curly will mean more likely to be hypoallergenic.
- Notice with ALL generation types, they are MORE LIKELY to be better for allergy sufferers. You may still have allergies with any of these if you’re someone who is extremely allergic. For me personally, I am obsessed with dogs, so if I was allergic, I’d invest in allergy shots 🙂
